The essentials: 907 Albany Highway, Victoria Park
Victoria Park is a colourful neighbourhood full of restaurants and cafes, any night of the week it is full of patrons looking for somewhere to satisfy their appetites.
Those who are familiar with the area would have heard of The Prophet – it is an extremely popular dining venue which is impossible to walk in. We booked a week in advance and scored the last table for a Tuesday night! Needless to say this gave me high expectations.
We were seated at an outside table, which was lovely in the summer weather. The dining area itself is quite clean and simple with white furnishings and minimal artwork. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive from the moment you arrive. Glancing over the menu I didn’t recognize many of the dishes – however there was a lot of lamb in the meat section and a very impressive section for vegetarians.
Complimentary pickles, dip and flat bread was the first to arrive, very tasty food. If we had known this came we may not have ordered our entrée.
We decided to try the yoghurt dip ($12); it was a smooth, creamy dip with a well in the centre filled with fresh herbs and olive oil. The flavours in this dip were absolutely divine – the taste reminded me of Persian feta, given that it was creamy and matched the herbs perfectly. A fantastic start to the night!
Next came our two mains – we selected the meat mixed platter ($31.50) which consisted of baba ganoush, tabouleh, hummus and three types of meat kebabs with rice. The meat was nicely seasoned and the combination of textures on the plate kept it interesting, this was a fantastic way to try a bit of everything and I would definitely recommend this dish if you are a first time Lebanese diner like me.
We also decided to try the lady fingers ($20) which was a combination of lamb mince with spinach, pine nuts which is then rolled in pastry. Once again the flavours in this dish were beautiful, a nice blend of spices in the mince combined with the crunch of the pine nuts really brought the flavours together.
At the beginning of the meal I was optimistic about choosing dessert, however after this epic feast we were completely stuffed!
If you are looking to try something a little different, well priced with an array of options I would highly recommend checking this place out. The portions are quite large so make sure you pace yourself! Overall a fantastic experience, I will be back soon.
