Essentials: Corner of Roberts & Rokeby Road, Subiaco
Open Sunday to Thursday 12noon to 9:00pm and Friday to Saturday 12noon to 10pm
Subiaco is a vastly diverse mecca for foodies. From cheap eats to fine dining, coffee shops and dessert houses it has a bit of everything no matter what you are craving. Having spent Sunday morning cruising through the Railway markets we had certainly worked up an appetite for something delicious and decided to check out Wagamama.
Wagamama was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday – perhaps the pending rain had everyone locked indoors. The restaurant is simply designed, with a large dining hall inside where you share tables with other guests, and a smaller dining area outside. We had our pick of seating and chose a table on the outdoor balcony – this would be a perfect spot for a summer lunch or warm evening meal.
I was extremely impressed with the menu – a diverse range of Asian inspired noodles, soups and salads. There were so many tempting dishes but in the end I opted for the teriyaki soba – grilled teriyaki salmon fillet on a bed of teppan-fried soba noodles with curry oil, snow peas, chillies, red onions, ginger, bean sprouts and baby bok choy. With teriyaki sauce, coriander and mixed sesame seeds ($21.90). All I can say about this dish is WOW. The textures differed from the crunch of the bean sprouts to the softness of the noodles and there was just enough teriyaki sauce without smothering the dish. I did feel the salmon was overcooked and a little dry, but this is my only criticism of the dish.
My lunching buddy decided on Thai style stir-fried noodles: stir-fried rice noodles with chicken and prawns, egg, spring onions, tamarind sauce and beansprouts. Garnished with lime, fresh coriander and crushed peanuts ($20.60). Although this dish was not as attractive, the flavours were equally as delicious – again the different textures were noticed and the overall flavor impact was huge.
Overall I was impressed with the taste of both dishes and without a doubt I’ll be back – there are other delicious menu items I am now dying to try!
